(UPDATE) Magnitude 5.7 earthquake hits Davao

The Philippine Star

COTABATO, Philippines (Xinhua) -  An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck the southern province of Davao Occidental at 1:44 p.m. today, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.

PHIVOLCS said the quake epicenter was at 31 kilometers southeast of Sarangani town in the province with a depth of 118 km.

Authorities have yet to determine whether the tremor caused any damage or casualties.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where continental plates collide causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

The most devastating earthquake struck the Philippines in August 1976 and triggered a tsunami which killed around 5,000 people in the Moro Gulf region in southern Philippines.
