(UPDATE) Leftist rebels attack patrol bases in Capiz, Iloilo

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - Members of the leftist rebel group New People's Army (NPA) attacked three patrol bases of the army in the central Philippines today, a military official said.

Maj. Ray Tiongson, spokesman of the Philippine Army's 3rd Infantry Division, said the rebels assaulted one after the other patrol bases in the villages of Daan Sur and Abangay in Tapaz town, Capiz province and Agcalaga village in Calinog town, Iloilo province.

Tiongson said government troops were able to repulse the NPA guerrillas and that no soldier was killed or injured.

He said the leftist rebels suffered casualties "as traces of bloodstains were seen by the pursuing troops along the (leftist) rebels' route of withdrawal."

Tiongson said civilians earlier informed the military of possible rebel attacks on government installations as part of the NPA's celebration of its 45th birthday anniversary on March 29.
