DOH warns public vs summer diseases

Sheila Crisostomo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Health (DOH) has warned the public of the prevalence of six diseases and health hazards during the summer months.

Health Secretary Enrique Ona urged the public to observe precautionary measures against sore eyes, sunburn, cough and colds, diarrhea and dog bite.

“This summer, millions of Filipinos will again travel far and wide seeking fun and entertainment. Many will explore beautiful sights and experience adventure and exploits, oftentimes unmindful of the danger that lurks behind,“ Ona said.

Ona warned sore eyes or conjunctivitis could lead to blindness when not treated properly. He underscored the need for regular hand washing to limit its spread.

“Sunburn can be prevented if you time your outdoor activities. Outdoor activities must be done in the early morning or late afternoon. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,” he said.

And to prevent the ill effects of too much sun exposure, a person should use sunscreen appropriately, he added.

Ona recommended the use of a product that retards both ultraviolet A (longwave) and ultraviolet B (shortwave) rays – Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 30, which should be applied sparingly, 30 minutes before actual sun exposure.

“Avoid heat stroke by drinking eight to 12 glasses of water a day. Remember not to stay under the sun too long. Holy Week penitents can also benefit from these tips,” he added.

Ona advised senior citizens to get vaccinated against influenza before the flu season begins in June.

To prevent diarrhea and vomiting from consumption of contaminated food, Ona urged the public to be wary of eating street food and ill prepared food for out-of-town trips.

“Remember that food spoils easily during hot summer months. Always have oral rehydration salt solution on hand just in case you get bad diarrhea,” he said.

Ona also warned that during the summer months, water supply could become scarce, compromising daily baths.

Ona said skin diseases abound when swimming in dirty water or unmaintained public swimming pools, so it is best to take a bath before and after plunging in. He also advised against urinating in the pool.
