PHL tries to set world record in organ donor sign up

Dennis Carcamo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines will attempt to set a world record for the "Most of People to Sign up as Organ Donor" on February

28.

Under the campaign of the Philippine Network for Organ Sharing under Department of Health's "I'm A Lifeline," the Philippine tries to set a record on the multiple sign up sites in the country.

Dr. Antonio Paraiso, manager of the Philippine Organ Donation and Transplantation Program, said the one-hour, and eight-hour multiple sign up categories in the Guinness Book of World Records is still vacant.

The current holder of single sign up site in the span of eight hour (over 10,450), and one hour (2,755) categories are held by India, Paraiso said.

Paraiso said the organ donations and transplantations have long been in place in the country but they remain unacceptable for many Filipinos.

Paraiso attributed this to the lack of understanding and awareness about its processes and consequences, preventing many from donating their organs.

"We are simply asking  the people to pledge; to leave a legacy that in the event they die in such manner, their organs can be used for transplantation," he said.

Under the program, a lifeline card will be issued to those who will sign up and there will be a national registry.

The following will be the six sign up sites for the Guinness bid:

Track and Field of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (Sta. Mesa, Manila)

Quezon City Circle (Quezon City)

RMTC (San Fernando City, La Union)

L. Mamba Gym (Tuguegarao City, Cagayan)

JMR Coliseum (Naga City)

Almendra's Gym (Davao City)

The DOH said netizens can also support the campaign by liking its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/LifelLinePHL, or following its Twitter account at @LifeLinePHL.
