Spider-Man new ambassador for Earth Hour
MANILA, Philippines - Spider-Man is taking on a new mission — to save the environment.
Earth Hour, the global movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), announced Spider-Man’s designation as the first superhero ambassador for Earth Hour at the launching of Earth Hour Blue — a new crowd funding and crowd drive to draw more participants to the famous lights out event to be held next month.
In a statement, the WWF said Earth Hour, Spider-Man and stars of the movie “The Amazing Spider-Man 2†— Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx and director Marc Webb — are supporting Earth Hour Blue, which also aims to raise funds for other global environmental projects.
“I’m proud Spider-Man is the first superhero ambassador for Earth Hour because he shows we can all be superheroes when we realize the power we all have. Earth Hour is a movement that has created massive impact around the world, so imagine what we can do this year with Spider-Man by our side,†said Garfield, who plays Spider-Man in the upcoming film.
WWF said the crowd funding section of the new Earth Hour platform would allow participants to help deliver energy-efficient stoves to families in Madagascar and raise funds to expand and conserve the iconic Table Mountain National Park in South Africa, among others.
The campaign, to be launched in the country on Feb. 19, also aims to help communities in the country build fiberglass boats to withstand climate impacts like Super Typhoon Yolanda.
The Philippines has been one of Earth Hour’s staunchest supporters since 2008 and has consistently topped town and city participation levels since 2009.
“Earth Hour gives you the power to inspire anyone, even if you’re just one person, and Earth Hour is much more than an hour. There are great projects from the crowd, for the planet, happening all over the world,†said Stone.
