MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - Six members of the country's terrorist group Abu Sayyaf were confirmed killed while six civilian volunteers were injured in clashes which erupted in southern Philippines yesterday, a military official said today.
Col. Jose Johriel Cenabre, commander of the 2nd Marine Brigade, said Abu Sayyaf leader Yasser Igasan was also injured during the skirmishes.
Cenabre said the Marines and civilian volunteers were conducting a security operation when they clashed with about 50 members of the Abu Sayyaf at Mabahay village, Talipao town in Sulu province.
Military officials said the operation was part of the military' s campaign against the Abu Sayyaf, which has linkages with foreign terrorist groups.
The military placed the Abu Sayyaf's strength at about 300 men. The rogue group has been tagged in various criminal activities such as kidnappings and bombings.
