MANILA, Philippines - The new commander of the Philippine Army will assume command today following a turnover ceremony to be led by President Aquino in Fort Bonifacio.
As of yesterday, Malacañang has not announced the successor of Army chief Lt. Gen. Noel Coballes, who retires after serving the force for more than three decades.
Sources said the President has appointed 7th Infantry Division chief Maj. Gen. Hernando Iriberri to head the Army. The military could not confirm the information.
“I have no information yet. There are no official announcements,†said Col. Ramon Zagala, spokesman for the Armed Forces.
Security officials refused to speak on the matter, noting that nothing is final until Aquino signs the appointment papers.
