(UPDATE) 6 killed in vehicular accident in Cotabato

The Philippine Star

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Xinhua) - Six people were killed after a speeding truck rammed into a tricycle in Pikit town in the southern Philippine province of North Cotabato yesterday, police said today.

Insp. Mautin Pangandingan said four victims died on the spot while two others died at a local hospital.

Pangandingan said the fatalities, which include a pregnant woman, were passengers of the tricycle.

He said the tricycle was rammed by the oncoming truck when it tried to overtake another vehicle. The truck driver and his companion are now being hunted by police.

Accidents are common in Philippine highways due to poor road conditions, ill-maintained vehicles and careless motorists. The government said at least 1,000 Filipinos die each year in vehicular accidents.
