1 dead, 3 missing in rain-triggered landslides in Mindanao

The Philippine Star

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Xinhua) - Landslides and flooding brought by a low pressure area (LPA) has killed one person and injured several others in Mindanao, authorities said today.

A series of landslides in some areas in the mining village of Mt. Diwata, Monkayo town, in Compostela Valley province since Saturday killed a 7-year old girl and injured nine others, according to Chief Inspector Jed Clamor, spokesperson of Southern Mindanao regional police.

Clamor said the landslides at 7 a.m. struck three communities in Mt. Diwata, even as local authorities were evacuating most of the village's 18,000 residents, most of whom are small-scale gold miners.

Three people are still missing.
More than 2,500 families or close to 10,000 people have been moved to safer places  as the LPA over General Santos City dumped heavy rains in a wide swath of area in southern and central Philippines, forcing the cancellation of about 36 domestic flights.
