GENEVA (Xinhua) - A Geneva-based international humanitarian movement requested aboout $95 million Tuesday to assist victims of super typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement said the Philippine Red Cross was facing an estimated 10 million people needing aid after the typhoon devastated the central Philippines on Friday.

The appeal was jointly made by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and the International Committee of the Red Cross - both institutions under the movement, to provide food, clean water, shelter and other essential relief over a period of 18 months. In particular need were those already suffering from the country's armed conflict.

The official death toll from Haiyan stood at 1,774 Monday night but there are fears it could rise much higher.
