MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang commended yesterday the overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who was part of a group that won this year’s Nobel peace prize.

“The whole nation has reason to rejoice for the awarding of the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize,” Secretary Herminio Coloma of the Presidential Communications Operations Group said over radio dzRB.

Coloma said Franz Ontal, of Victorias City in Negros Occidental, was part of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) that was awarded the Nobel peace prize.

“Like thousands of overseas Filipino workers, Mr. Ontal reflects the Filipinos’ exceptional talent, skill and hard work,” Coloma said, adding that they are the country’s heroes.

As head inspector for training of the OPCW, Ontal performs a crucial role in pushing the United Nations’ campaign against the use of chemical weapons in armed conflicts.
