More protests vs pork barrel system readied

MANILA, Philippines - Militant group Bayan on Friday said it supports various protests against the pork barrel system and corruption, saying these will continue to spread in the coming weeks.
"Nearly two months after the Napoles story broke, no one has been charged for plunder and the pork barrel system is still not abolished...This government even tries to pit the various anti-pork groups against each other in a desperate attempt to divide and rule,"Bayan secretary general Renato Reyes Jr. said.
"We remain united in the call for the abolition of the pork barrel system and the prosecution of all those involved in the scam. We must prevent Aquino and his allies from passing a pork-ridden budget for 2014. We have to get pork out of the 2014 budget and allocate more funds to social services like education and health," he added.
Reyes said that Bayan is supporting the calls for continuing mass actions on September 13 and September 21, the anniversary of Martial Law.
Various groups and individuals last Sept. 3 called on the people to gather once more in Luneta in Manila to press for the total abolition of the pork barrel system.
Meanwhile, the September 13 rally will feature an interfaith and cultural program and a concert against pork barrel system.
Bayan will also lead a protest action in front of the House of Representatives on September 9 to highlight the issue of presidential pork on the day of the hearings on the presidents’ budget.
"This type of corruption will not go away after just one mass action. The problem is so pervasive and right now, those in power are going for selective investigation and prosecution,"Reyes said.
