Michael Punongbayan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. grew richer by a little more than P.9 million in 2012, his latest statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN) showed.

Brillantes told the Office of the Ombudsman that he is now worth over P32.427 million from a net worth of P31.525 million in 2011, showing a difference of P902,018.

The increase in Brillantes’ wealth is reflected in the higher value of his cash, shares of stocks, investments, and bank and time deposits which are now at P19.095 million from the previous year’s P17.250 million.

He declared ownership of two vehicles in 2011, but only one – a 2007 Toyota Fortuner valued at P1.5 million – as of Dec. 31, 2012.

The value of his real properties remained at more than P8.831 million, covering a house and lot, residential lot, agricultural lands, rice lands, corn lands and a sugarcane land.

He declared he has other properties like law books he inherited from his father, personal effects, clothing and furniture, which he valued at P3 million.

He also declared the same business interest and financial connection with the trading firm World of Commerce Center Phils. in Intramuros, Manila and disclosed he has a brother who is an undersecretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs by the name of Jose Brillantes.

The STAR secured a copy of the Comelec chief’s SALN only yesterday because he filed the document after the April 30, 2013 deadline unlike President Aquino, Vice President Jejomar Binay, Commission on Audit Chairperson Ma. Grace Pulido-Tan, and Civil Service Commission Chairman Francisco Duque III.
