NZ launches strategy for stronger ties with Asean

MANILA, Philippines - The New Zealand government has launched its strategy for building political, trade and people-to-people ties with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

New Zealand Ambassador Reuben Levermore, in a statement yesterday, said the document “New Zealand’s ASEAN Partnership: one pathway to 10 nations” sets a series of ambitious goals for New Zealand.

“New Zealand has a strong relationship with the 10 nations of ASEAN. This strategy explains how we are seeking to deepen that relationship at all levels. It makes clear our ambition to build our political relationships, deepen our trading relationships, and offer support in areas such as education, security and agriculture,” the ambassador said.

Levermore said New Zealand is lifting its engagement with the Philippines as the two countries have a friendly, longstanding relationship.

“But there is more we can do together. This includes more frequent contact between our government leaders and businesspeople,” he said.

“The strategy commits the New Zealand government to work more closely with businesses to open doors in the region and increase the profile of New Zealand,” Levermore said.
