5 volcanic quakes detected at Taal
MANILA, Philippines - Five volcanic earthquakes were detected at Taal Volcano in Batangas in the past 24 hours but the volcano remained at alert level 1, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said yesterday.
The volcano remained at alert level 1 as of 8 a.m. yesterday, meaning there is no imminent threat of a hazardous eruption.
Phivolcs noted a slight increase in water temperature at the eastern sector of the main crater lake to 33.8 degrees Celsius from 33.1 degrees Celsius, increase in water level of 0.33 meter from 0.29 meter, and slight decrease in water acidity of pH 3.04 from pH 3.02 during the 24-hour observation period.
Philvolcs, however, reminded the public that the main crater is strictly off-limits as sudden steam explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate.
The northern portion of the main crater rim, in the vicinity of Daang Kastila trail, may also become hazardous when steam emission along existing fissures suddenly increases.
Phivolcs also warned the public that the entire volcano island is a permanent danger zone, and permanent settlement in the island is strongly not recommended.
