VP defends Noy's sister, says Aquinos not corrupt
MANILA, Philippines - Vice President Jejomar Binay on Friday defended presidential sister Ballsy Aquino, who had been accused of extortion along with husband Eldon Cruz.
In a statement, Binay said he can personally vouch for the "integrity" of the couple, who were allegedly involved in extorting money from a company in exchange for government contracts.
"Kilala ko ang pamilya ni Pangulong Cory. Nakilala ko sila bago pa at lalung-lalo na nang magsimula si Pangulong Noynoy na maglingkod sa bayan. Wala silang bahid ng korapsyon at abuso sa kapangyarihan.
Reports have surfaced that the group of Aquino-Cruz was allegedly involved in an extort attempt against a Czech company that is supposedly among the bidders for the new coaches of the Metro Rail Transit.
A Palace official also earlier defended the presidential sister, saying the Aquinos won't taint the "legacy" of their parents.
“We know for a fact that they carry the legacy of the names of their parents. It's a very precious legacy that they have been holding. They are the bearers of this legacy and they will not, in any way, shape, or form, malign or demean this legacy,†said presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda.
He claimed that Aquino and Cruz were never involved in government affairs.
"I can only think of two or three times, or four times they were here (Palace) for the whole three years that their brother has assumed the presidency," Lacierda said.
