No terror threat detected – AFP

MANILA, Philippines - The military assured the public yesterday of their safety following warnings from Canada and Australia against travel to Mindanao.

Armed Forces public affairs chief Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala said security measures are in place to thwart any threat to public safety.

“We want to assure them that even without this warning, we continue our security operations in the area and we protect not only foreigners but (also) Filipinos,” he said.

Zagala said security forces are out to secure areas considered as hotspots in Mindanao.

“We recognize that these areas have threats, and that’s the reason why task forces and task groups are created,” he said.

“They are there to (maintain) a secured environment. They are there organized to serve as a deterrent.” 

Zagala said the military has not detected any threat that could affect the country’s security.

“We respect the decision of both Australia and Canada to warn their citizens (against) going to such areas they perceive as danger zones,” he said. “They have the right to protect their citizens and they have the right to warn their citizens if there is danger that is lurking.”

Canada and Australia have warned their citizens against traveling to parts of Mindanao due to threats of terrorism and kidnapping.

Australia urged its diplomats to avoid travel to Davao, Cotabato and Zamboanga.

Canada warned its citizens of “serious threat of terrorist attacks and kidnapping.”
