Jinggoy to critics: Give Batas Kasambahay a chance

Marvin Sy - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Inspite of some early problems reported on the implementation of Republic Act 10361 or the Batas Kasambahay, Sen. Jinggoy Estrada said yesterday that it is too early to talk about reviewing the law.

Estrada, the principal author and sponsor of the measure in the Senate, appealed to critics to give the law a chance to succeed.

Complaints have been raised, mostly by the employers of domestic workers, about the procedures in complying with the requirements at the Social Security System (SSS), PhilHealth and Pag-IBIG Fund.

Apart from a general lack of information about what has to be done, a lot of the complaints were also related to the tedious process of registering at the SSS, both for the employer and employee.

Even the fees that have to be paid by the employers as well as the mandatory enrollment of the employee with Pag-IBIG Fund have been raised as problem areas of the law.

Estrada said that the law should be allowed to work first before Congress conducts any review.

The law recently took effect with the publication of the implementing rules and regulations by the Department of Labor and Employment.

President Aquino signed the bill into law last Jan. 18.
