Phl, Spain observe 11th Friendship Day

BALER, Aurora, Philippines – The Philippines and Spain eye stronger ties as they observe today the 11th Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day coinciding with the 114th anniversary of the Siege of Baler.

“Today’s celebration will showcase how our relations with Spain have become better and stronger,” said Sen. Edgardo Angara, chairman of the Philippines-Spain Parliamentary Friendship.

The event is being held since 2003 by virtue of Republic Act 9187, authored by Angara and his son, incoming senator Juan Edgardo Angara.

Foreign dignitaries led by Spanish Ambassador Jorge Domecq will lead today’s celebration. Aside from Angara and his son, Gov. Gerardo Noveras, Rep. Bellaflor Angara-Castillo and Baler Mayor Nelianto Bihasa will  attend today’s event.

The older Angara said the two nations “share a special bond, a partnership which can be directed toward increased investment, technology transfer and intellectual exchange.”

He said the country recently signed P9.2 billion worth of economic and cultural agreements and investments, including grants on energy, information technology, agriculture and fisheries.
