2 volcanic earthquakes recorded around Taal volcano
MANILA, Philippines - Two volcanic earthquakes were recorded around Taal volcano in Batangas Friday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said yesterday.
Phivolcs officials said one of the quakes was monitored at 9:32 p.m. and felt at intensity 2 by residents in the villages of Tibag, Pira-Piraso and Alas-as.
Despite the increased activity of Taal, state seismologists said there is nothing to worry about since tremors below 10 are still within the normal parameters of a volcano under Alert Level 1.
Alert Level 1, which means that hazardous eruption is not imminent, remains in effect over Taal.
Phivolcs, however, reminded the public to stay away from the main crater because sudden steam explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate.
It added that the northern part of the main crater rim, in the vicinity of Daang Kastila Trail, may become hazardous when steam emission along existing fissures suddenly increases.
