UNA to focus on independent voters

Jess Diaz - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) will focus on independent voters in the last week of the campaign.

UNA senatorial candidate and Cagayan Rep. Jack Enrile yesterday said that although many candidates are reportedly pandering to the “command votes,” the “conscience and independent votes” could be the “cutting edge” of the elections.

“Our voters are becoming more intelligent, independent and conscience-led because of the advance of education, the expanded coverage of social and professional media, and the growing patriotism among our young voters,” Enrile noted.

“I do not discount the value of social and religious leadership, especially when it comes to faith and morals, but I believe that in the end, individual conscience based on faith would be the guiding light of the individual voter,” he added.

The bloc-voting Iglesia ni Cristo has reportedly endorsed seven senatorial candidates from the administration coalition Team PNoy and five from UNA, including Enrile.

But the son of Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said that whatever will be the outcome of Monday’s elections, Filipinos should unite after the votes are counted.

“Elections are supposed to unite the country, not divide it. After the elections, we are all Filipinos located in a rich archipelago. We must unite to make our country strong and prosperous, so that our people will choose to live here as a paradise in Asia,” he said.
