DFA monitoring Texas fertilizer plant blast

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) assured on Thursday that it is monitoring the massive explosion in a fertilizer plant near Waco, Texas that killed an undetermined number of people and hurt dozens.
 
DFA spokesperson Raul Hernandez said in his Twitter account that the Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles, California is trying to determine if there are Filipino casualties from the incident. 
 
"It (the Consulate General) is now trying to get in touch with [Filipino community] leaders if there are Filipinos affected by the explosion," Hernandez said.
 
He added that the Filipino population in the said state is concentrated in the cities of Houston and Dallas.
 
A radio report also quoted Hernandez as saying that there are about 160,000 Filipinos in the entire state of Texas.
 
An Associated Press report said the explosion at West Fertilizer in the town of West on Wednesday evening was heard as far as 72 kilometers away.
 
The blast injured dozens of people and killed an unknown number of others, according to the report.
 
Meanwhile, CNN reported that at least two people were dead due to incident that "leveled several homes and prompted a widescale evacuation in the community of 2,600 people."
