(UPDATE) 5 dead, 10 injured in Davao floods, landslides
DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Xinhua) - Five people died, 10 others were injured and thousands were displaced following a storm that hit Davao recently, disaster officials said today.
The deaths were recorded in the provinces of Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley while the 10 got injured due to floods and landslides as tropical depression Crising dumped torrential rains in the southern Philippine region of Davao, according to disaster officials in these areas.
In Davao del Norte province, flood and landslides hit four towns as well as the provincial capital Tagum, with two people drowned in swollen rivers in Kapalong and Talaingod towns, Sonio Sanchez, provincial disaster officer told Xinhua.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council ( NDRRMC) meanwhile said at least 27,000 families have been displaced due to the calamity throughout the region.
In the gold-rich Compostela Valley, one person was killed and five others were hurt as a landslide hit the mining village of Mt. Diwalwal in Monkayo town late Thursday evening, according to Raul Villocino, provincial disaster officer.
Two people also drowned in the towns of New Bataan and Montevista as the storm hit land on Tuesday, lashing the province with moderate to heavy rains.
Elsewhere in Mindanao, five others were injured in a landslide in Lanao del Norte province, officials said.
