LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines – Sen. Loren Legarda appealed to national and local candidates to embark on a clean campaign and prevent littering to make the environment clean.

“When I say clean, not just clean for our surroundings to make it environment-friendly but also clean in terms of no mudslinging,” said Legarda during a press conference at the St. Ellis Hotel here last Valentine’s Day.

She said aspirants should also promote their own programs of government and avoid using bad words and quarreling during the campaign.

Legarda said that candidates should also avoid littering and garbage from campaign materials as she set guidelines for her regional political officers to abide by the rules of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) regarding the display of campaign materials.

Campaign workers were told not to put Legarda posters on trees, she said after she and Legazpi Mayor Geraldine Rosal led the planting of at least 5,000 narra and agoho trees in Barangay Bogtong.

Legarda said walls in public areas should not be covered with wall-to-wall campaign materials.

She urged all national and local candidates to strictly put their campaign materials on Comelec designated areas.

Legarda encouraged candidates to use posters made of paper, cardboard, and materials that could be recycled and reused.
