Revilla is new Lakas chairman

Paolo Romero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - In a bid to revive the party, ensure the victory of its candidates in the May elections and become a party in power again, the Lakas-Christian and Muslim Democrats (CMD) elected a new set of officials yesterday.

The party’s national executive committee elected Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez as chairman and president, respectively.

Lakas-CMD also relegated to the background its former head, former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, and elected her as chairperson emeritus.

Former President Fidel Ramos is also holding the position of chairman emeritus of Lakas-CMD.

Revilla said the party would neither be opposition nor administration, adding that they are distancing themselves from the bickering between the Liberal Party and the United Nationalist Alliance.

“We will now fly on our own,” Revilla told reporters after his election. “We will always side with the Filipino people, we will always advocate and support what is right.”

“We are just for the betterment of the people,” he added.
