Pinoys in NY told to brace for another storm

MANILA, Philippines - Filipinos in New York were advised to brace themselves for another storm that was forecast to hit northeastern United States from Wednesday until yesterday.

Nine days ago, the US, especially New York, was ravaged by hurricane “Sandy.”

In an advisory, the Philippine Consulate General in New York urged Filipinos to observe the necessary precautions, stay indoors during inclement weather and avoid unnecessary travel.

“Our kababayans are advised to ensure that they have a supply of flashlights, batteries and other similar equipment, potable water and food which is not easily perishable and warm clothing in case of power outages,” Consul General Mario de Leon Jr. said.

The consulate issued the advisory as authorities told thousands of people in low-lying and coastal areas affected by hurricane Sandy last week to leave their neighborhoods as the new storm, although less powerful, will bring rain, wet snow and strong winds that could trigger floods, uproot trees and cut electricity.

De Leon said members of the Filipino community in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Maine have been advised to check updates from their local councils, utilities providers, and media on developments regarding the winter storm.

Filipino community members in New York who may need assistance in finding shelter during the winter storm can proceed to public shelters as well as bus pick-up locations for travel to shelters that have been prepared by the city government.

Several Filipino-American-run centers may also accommodate those needing urgent temporary shelter during the winter storm.
