Navotas suspends classes in all schools today

- Pete Laude - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Navotas Mayor John Rey Tiangco has announced the suspension of classes in all levels in public and private schools in the city today due to the anticipated 1.9-meter high tide.

Jason Baesa, a staff at the city hall administration office, said that the mayor made the announcement at around 5 p.m. yesterday with the high tide expected at about 10:46 a.m. today.

“For now, the water level in front of the city hall is only about five inches high but with the intermittent rain and the high tide tomorrow, the mayor decided to postpone classes” for the safety of students, Baesa said.

At least 10 of Navotas’ 14 villages were badly affected by floodwaters yesterday spawned by an overnight heavy downpour due to typhoon “Gener.”

Some 700 families, mostly living in the shoreline barangays, were forced to evacuate their houses after big waves started battering their shanties.

Around 100 of the houses along the shore were swept away by the surging seawater, but no casualty was reported.

Valenzuela City followed suit and said classes are also suspended today.
