Students urged to try career as guidance counselors

MANILA, Philippines - Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz yesterday advised high school students, college graduates and job seekers to consider a career in guidance counseling, saying it is expected to grow in the next five years.

“The prospects for guidance counselors as a career are bright and the work of a career guidance counselor is noble and very important,” said Baldoz at the National Career Advocacy Congress recently.

“Guidance counselors play a large part in providing students with relevant labor market information that could help them choose careers that suit the requirements of employers in the 21st century.”

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) explained that a four-year course in psychology is usually the educational requirement for a guidance counselor.

“The cost of obtaining the requirement ranges from P10,000 to P45,000 per semester in private colleges. However, the tuition costs less by around 10 percent to 40 percent in public colleges and universities which offer the same discipline,” it said.
