Diocese of Malolos to pray for senator-judges

- Dino Balabo -

MALOLOS CITY, Philippines  – The Diocese of Malolos will pray for senator-judges today for discernment and wisdom as they prepare to hand down a verdict on the impeachment trial of the Chief Justice Renato Corona on Tuesday.

This as the diocese celebrates the feast of the Pentecost, the traditional observance of the descent of the Holy Spirit as recorded in the Book of Acts.

Bishop Jose Francisco Oliveros of the Diocese of Malolos said that the senator-judges need the guidance of the Holy Spirit in discerning the truth from the untruth.

“This is a historic event in our country and an opportunity to tell the people the truth,” Oliveros said.

He added, “We will pray for our senator-judges because they need light and guidance from the Holy Spirit.”

Oliveros said that all parishes under the Diocese of Malolos would offer a prayer not only for the senators, but for Corona and the Filipino people as well.

He said that the Chief Justice had shown courage by testifying and returning to the impeachment court.

However, he said that Corona also needs guidance from the Holy Spirit.

For the Filipinos, Oliveros said that the impeachment has been divisive as sectors took partisan stand.

“Let us not be partisan, let us seek the truth and accept it,” he said, noting that they would continue to pray for the unity of the country.

As this developed, many Bulakenyos expressed divided opinions on the possible verdict on the Corona impeachment trial.

Majority said that Corona would lose when the senator-judges cast their vote, but there are others who said that there is a slim chance that Corona would be acquitted.

Some politicians said that there is a high possibility that senator-judges will likely vote along political lines.

“The trial was like a show, but at the end of the day, what matters is the vote of the senators,” said a local politician who asked not to be named.

He added that the verdict would be crucial not only for Corona but for the senators seeking reelection as well.
