MANILA, Philippines – Supreme Court spokesman Midas Marquez reiterated today that Chief Justice Renato Corona will not resign amid calls of the prosecution for him to step down.
In a press conference, Marquez said Corona however is now gearing-up for legal battles on the impeachment case filed against him.
"Resignation is out of the question," he said, noting that the Chief Justice will have his 15-man defense team.
Corona's defense team included lawyers Eduardo Delos Angeles, Tranquil Salvador, Ramon Esguerra, and Karen Jimeno among others.
Meantime, Corona asked the Senate to punish the prosecution panel for revealing several documents ahead of the impeachment trial.
Corona, through his lawyers, said Rep. Neil Tupas and the rest of his team violated Rule 18 of the impeachment rules when they released, in a press conference, documents allegedly revealing the ill-gotten wealth of the Chief Justice.
Rule 18 prohibits any member of the Senate, as well as the prosecution and defense, from making any comments and exposure on the merits of the case.
The defense wanted the Senate to issue any disciplinary measures against the prosecution team.
The impeachment proceeding against Corona will start on Jan. 16.
