Ombudsman to bare accomplishments
MANILA, Philippines - Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales is expected to bare her accomplishments during her first 100 days in office today, with focus likely on her office’s success in reclaiming its credibility.
Media Affairs Bureau chief Edgardo Diansuy said much has changed since the retired Supreme Court justice became the country’s chief graft buster in August after the resignation of Merceditas Gutierrez.
He said the number of complaints filed with the Office of the Ombudsman has gone up because of the public’s renewed trust in the anti-graft agency.
Diansuy said cases resolved have also increased during the period because of Morales’ efforts to speed up deliberation on cases.
One of Morales’s first acts was to order the hiring of more than a hundred lawyers to strengthen the Office of the Ombudsman’s legal muscle.
She also issued an order imposing punctuality on officials and personnel.
Although criticized for her “martial law” type of instilling discipline, many have also praised Morales for her aggressiveness in winning back the public’s confidence in the Office of the Ombudsman.
