Philpost goes high-tech

- Evelyn Macairan -

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Postal Corp. (PhilPost) is set to launch this month a system that would modernize the country’s mail system and help them track parcel delivery.

The launching and demonstration of their Information Technology kiosk would be one of the activities during the 228th anniversary of PhilPost, to be celebrated from Nov. 8 to 11.

In a statement, Postmaster General and PhilPost chief executive officer Josefina de la Cruz and the corporation’s Board of Directors headed by chairman Cesar Sarino have lined up several activities in connection with Postal Consciousness Week.

There would be a street dancing competition at 5:30 a.m. on Nov. 8, to be followed by the flag raising ceremony at 8:30 a.m. A special program is also set to start an hour later with the opening of the Philatelic Exhibit and the launching of the International Year of the Forest special commemorative stamps.

Simultaneous activities would be held in all their regional offices.

Students and the public would also be treated to a free philatelic lecture from well-known stamp collectors, an on-the-spot letter writing contest, a trade fair exhibit courtesy of the Filipino Inventors’ Society Inc. and sale of selected food items under the program One Town One Product.

PhilPost would also give recognition to its deserving employees through the Outstanding Postal Workers award.

De la Cruz said they have also tied up with the Philippine Red Cross for blood letting on Nov. 9 to be participated in by their employees from the National Capital Region (NCR).

The Spaniards started the postal service in the country in 1783 when Governor-General Joseph Basco y Vargas formally organized the postal system in the Islands. At that time, Basco issued detailed instructions regarding the rules, rates, routes and the setting up of various post offices in the Islands.

On April 2, 1992, by virtue of Republic Act 7354, the Postal Service Office became the present-day Philippine Postal Corp.
