Proposal to rename sports complex after FPJ thumbed down

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan, Philippines – The owner of one of the leading universities in this province thumbed down a proposal by a board member renaming the Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation Sports Complex to Fernando Poe Jr. Sports Complex in recognition of the late King of Philippine Cinema’s accomplishments as a true San Carlenean.

Dr. Ma. Lilia Posadas-Juan, president and chairman of the Board of Trustees, said in her letter to the provincial board dated Oct. 3 that Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation (VMUF) is a private institution managed by private citizens.

“Mr. Fernando Poe Jr. had not been part of the VMUF community as student, faculty member or university co-worker,” Juan said.

But she added that although she does not conform to the proposed ordinance authored by sixth district Board Member Ranjit Ramos Shahani, she assured the provincial board members that they will continuously support the sports program of the provincial government.

Shahani’s proposed ordinance explains that Pangasinan is privileged to have popular sons and daughters, among them movie icon Poe, fondly known as FPJ.

FPJ’s roots can be traced to San Carlos City, Pangasinan.

His father is from Barangay Caoayan Kiling.
