Shamcey wants to teach in alma mater UP

- Reinir Padua -

MANILA, Philippines - Shamcey Supsup had a motorcade in Quezon City and Makati City yesterday, her second day home after placing 3rd runner-up in the Miss Universe pageant held in Sao Paulo, Brazil last week.

Supsup visited her alma mater UP Diliman, where she graduated magna cum laude and topped the architecture licensure exams last year.

She was welcomed at the administration building at Quezon Hall, where placards saying “100% UP Arki’’ greeted her.

Supsup expressed her intention to teach at the state university in a meeting with UP president Alfredo Pascual.

Prior to her visit to UP, Supsup’s first stop was at Quezon City Hall where she was met by city officials led by Mayor Herbert Bautista, who asked for her autograph.

Wearing a green sun dress, the Miss Universe 3rd runner-up was also welcomed by Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte and Councilors Alfred Vargas and Roderick Paulate.

Vargas, himself an actor, asked the beauty queen to sign his polo barong. He also gave her a bouquet of flowers.

Outstanding Makati citizen

The city government of Makati yesterday named Supsup as an outstanding citizen of Makati.

Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay personally presented the award dubbed as “Gawad Lakan Tagkan,” the city’s highest award of merit, to Supsup during her visit to her alma mater, the Makati High School.

The “Gawad Lakan Tagkan” was named after Lakan Tagkan, the pre-colonial ruler of the vast kingdom of Namayan, part of which is now Makati.

Binay said the city conferred the award to Supsup in recognition of her great success and the honor she has brought to Makati City and the entire country.

“We regard Ms. Shamcey Supsup as a worthy recipient of the Gawad Lakan Tagkan for she is truly an inspiration to the Filipino youth. She is a wellspring of wisdom and experience, and an outstanding model to all Filipinos and other citizens of the world,” Binay said.

Previous recipients of the award include Regina Paz Lopez of ABS-CBN Foundation for social service, Antonio Cabangon-Chua for media and public affairs, Francisco Licuanan III for business, and the late national artists Leandro Locsin for architecture, and Lucio San Pedro for music.

After the awarding ceremony at the Makati High School, the city honored Supsup with a ticker tape parade on Ayala Avenue, starting from the Makati Central Fire Station to EDSA.

Hundreds of residents, city workers and visitors joined the event.

Supsup graduated salutatorian at Makati High School in 2003 and was an active member of its Supreme Student Council.

She was also sent to Japan as an exchange student for school year 2001-2002 and had been the school representative in various leadership seminars. – With Jose Rodel Clapano
