MANILA, Philippines - Marcos loyalists are glad that President Aquino has ordered a review of the proposal to give the late President Ferdinand Marcos a hero’s burial.
“A burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani for President Marcos is long overdue. It is just fitting for him being a former president who had served his country well,” Marcos Loyalists Foundation founder Cherry Covarrubias told The STAR in a phone interview.
“He has also done many things during his presidency,” Covarrubias said.
Aquino has designated Vice President Jejomar Binay to create a committee that would study proposals to have Marcos buried at the Libingan.
“Leftists and the communists are the only ones opposing President Marcos’ burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. They should know the history of the country. Majority of the Filipinos are supporting his burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani,” she said.
“I am urging President Aquino not to listen to the leftist because our country will not move forward if he will listen to them,” Covarrubias said.
Covarrubias said Marcos’ declaration of Martial Law on Sept. 21, 1972 was necessary because of the threat of communist takeover at that time.
“We would have been converted into a communist country before Vietnam became one had President Marcos did not declared martial law. Let us not twist history. We are really happy with these recent developments. At least, there will be closure and President Aquino should not listen to whispers of leftists and communists,” Covarrubias said. She lauded Aquino for having an open mind on the issue.
“It’s really a good development,” she said.
Covarrubias said Aquino should take into consideration a resolution signed by more than 200 congressmen urging him to allow a hero’s burial for the late strongman.
Earlier, Binay said he would consult with all political parties and non-government organizations regarding the clamor by Marcos supporters.
Binay said the sentiments of the people on the issue must be heard.
