Quake jolts Metro; epicenter off Mindoro

- Ghio Ong, Helen Flores -

MANILA, Philippines - A magnitude 5.7 earthquake rocked parts of Luzon, including Metro Manila, yesterday evening but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, state seismologists said.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) director Renato Solidum said the quake occurred around 6:30 p.m. with its epicenter traced at 12 kilometers northeast of Lubang Island, Occidental Mindoro.

Solidum said the quake was felt at Intensity 4 in Manila, Talisay in Batangas and Tagaytay City; Intensity 3 in the cities of Quezon and Makati; San, Jose and Calapan, Mindoro; and Intensity 2 in Plaridel, Bulacan and Baguio City.

He said the quake had a depth of 74 km and “was too deep to generate a tsunami.”

A magnitude 6.1 quake jolted parts of Luzon, including Manila City, on Sunday but there were no reports of damage or injuries.

The Philippines lies on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area where large earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
