Some Filipinos fleeing Tokyo -- Phl envoy
MANILA, Philippines - Philippine Ambassador to Japan Manolo Lopez said today that Filipinos in the capital city of Tokyo have started fleeing to safer areas due to fears of radiation leaks from the damaged Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant.
Lopez said in a radio interview that many Filipinos staying in Tokyo have already fled to the southern areas of the calamity-stricken country, particularly in Osaka and Nagoya.
He said the Filipinos are currently staying with their friends' and relatives' residences to avoid radiation contamination.
Lopez said there was still no reason for the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo to start conducting forced evacuations of Filipinos.
In a radio interview, Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman Ed Malaya said the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo is already setting up an evacuation plan in Japan, citing that evacuation plan prioritizes Filipinos in Fukushima.
Lopez, meanwhile, said that they were able to bring 58 Filipinos from Fukushima to Tokyo. He said a total of 100 Filipinos have been rescued from Fukushima.
The Philippine Embassy in Tokyo, meanwhile, has posted names of 48 Filipinos who remained unaccounted for since the magnitude 8.9 quake struck Japan last week.

‘Radiation below dangerous level’
In a bulletin released today, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that dose rate information coming from 47 cities in Japan remained "well below levels which are dangerous to human health."
"This is a positive development. In Tokyo, there has been no significant change in radiation levels since yesterday," the IAEA said.
Meanwhile, the IAEA said that dose rates detected around the 30-kilometer zone of the nuclear power plant rose significantly in the last 24 hours.
It said that in one location, 80 to 170 microsievert per hour was registered and in another location the reading was 26 to 95 microsievert per hour.
"Dose rates to the north-west of the nuclear power plants, were observed in the range 3 to 170 microsievert per hour, with the higher levels observed around 30 km from the plant. Dose rates in other directions are in the 1 to 5 microsievert per hour range," it added.
Radiation monitoring in Phl
In the Philippines, Alomanda dela Rosa of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute said plumes coming from Japan still pose no threats to the country as well as to the marine life around the Pacific.
Dela Rosa said the plume from Japan continued to move eastward. She said it may hit parts of the United States and Canada, but the radioactivity detected within the plume would continue to dissipate as it gets nearer the two countries.
Meanwhile, Dela Rosa said that PNRI teams have been deployed to check radiation levels over Metro Manila.
"Ang mga level na mga ito at the moment ay napakababa pa rin to be able to affect ang mga dadaanan ng plume na ito," she said.
She added that marine life around the Pacific remains safe from the nuclear plume.
"Pagbagsak niya may additional dilution ng tubig, so wala sigurong epekto pa at this point sa marine life," she said.
