10-M signature campaign vs mining in Palawan launched

MANILA, Philippines - Various sectors launched yesterday a 10-million signature campaign as part of an effort to put an end to mining activities in Palawan, known as the Philippines’ last ecological frontier.

Gina Lopez, ABS-CBN Foundation managing director and convenor of the “Save Palawan Movement,” said the signature campaign was meant to support the stand of various groups pushing for the “No to Mining in Palawan” policy.

“I feel if one person will say it (no to mining), I think they will not listen, but if 10 million (people) from the Philippines and all over the world say, in one voice, that we will not allow our biodiversity to be ravaged, then I think people will start listening,” Lopez said.

The launching of the campaign also served as tribute to slain broadcaster and environmentalist Dr. Gerardo Ortega, who was murdered in Puerto Princesa City last Jan. 24. The gunman and three others are now in police custody and authorities are trying to identify the mastermind behind the attack.

Environmental groups expressed belief that Ortega was murdered due to his strong stand against mining and support for other programs protecting the environment.

Moments before Ortega’s murder, Lopez said she was talking with him over the phone and they were finalizing the program for the launching of the signature campaign.

Ortega’s eldest daughter Mika, who was present during the launch, said food, water and air are the most important things in life and not gold, nickel and other minerals.
