MANILA, Philippines – President Aquino reappointed yesterday Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) governor Amando Tetangco to a fresh six-year term.
Aquino said he has confidence in Tetangco, and “in addition my economic team recommended him.”
Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said the President offered the post to Tetangco but the BSP chief had asked for time to consult his family.
Lacierda said Tetangco met with Aquino and Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima yesterday afternoon and that was when Tetangco formally accepted the offer.
In a text message to reporters, Tetangco – whose first term will expire in June – confirmed he has accepted Aquino’s offer and thanked the President for his trust and confidence.
“We commit ourselves to the institution to continue working tirelessly to remain true to our mandate of price stability and a sound banking system,” he said.
Tetangco is the first governor to be offered a second term since the Central Bank of the Philippines was transformed into the BSP in 1993. – Aurea Calica, Laurence Agcaoili
