MANILA, Philippines - Motorists using the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) should brace for higher toll fees – by approximately 250 percent – in January.
The Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) finally approved the application to raise toll fees by P3.02 per kilometer at SLEX by its operator, Malaysian-controlled South Luzon Tollways Corp. (SLTC).
TRB spokesman Julius Corpuz said the SLTC had agreed to a gradual implementation of the toll increase, starting with a partial hike on Jan. 1.
“It will be a discounted increase. What they will implement is a lower toll fee,” Corpuz told The STAR.
Corpuz said that while the TRB granted a higher toll rate of P3.02 per kilometer, the SLTC will only implement a P2.68 per kilometer rate from Jan. 1 up to March 31.
At P2.68 per kilometer, the toll rate for Class 1 vehicles from Alabang to Calamba will become P76, from the current P22.
The SLTC will impose the full P3.02 hike by April 1, 2011.
