Lakas-Kampi may break up if GMA gives up leadership

- Paolo Romero -

MANILA, Philippines - A member of former ruling party Lakas-Kampi-CMD believes the once formidable party would crumble if Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo steps down as chair. There are speculations that there would be a major reorganization in the party in the coming weeks.

“Personally, I will not participate in the reorganization. But I strongly believe that PGMA (Arroyo) should remain as chair or else the party might disintegrate,” said Northern Samar Rep. Emil Ong.

Ong is part of the 65-member Lakas bloc that supported the speakership bid of Quezon City Rep. Feliciano Belmonte Jr. of the Liberal Party instead of their party mate Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman, who became House minority leader. Lakas, which comprises 100 members in the House of Representatives, broke into two factions after President Aquino’s ascension into power.

The party was also rocked by massive defections to the Liberal Party.

The Lakas minority bloc, led by Lagman, includes Arroyo. Lakas leaders met last month at the Clark Freeport to discuss the possibility of leadership change. Among those considered to replace Arroyo were Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez.

Ong said it is possible that their faction would oppose the reorganization.

Lagman said Arroyo would decide on the reorganization.

“It’s her decision,” Lagman said in a telephone interview. Lakas leaders are expected to hold a caucus again on Saturday.
