- Sheila Crisostomo -

MANILA, Philippines - Most of the injuries recorded nationwide during the first quarter of the year were incurred from vehicular accidents, the Department of Health (DOH) reported.

The agency’s National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) said of the total of 9,521 injuries recorded during the time period, 3,077, or 33 percent, were from vehicular accidents.

NEISS said most of the accidents involve colliding motorcycles, jeepneys, and cargo trucks handled by intoxicated drivers.

DOH urges the public to wear helmets when riding motorcycles and to refrain from driving if they have taken alcoholic beverages.

It also urged legislators to pass a law against drunk driving and the mandatory use of helmets for motorcycle drivers.
