Tree surgeons needed

MANILA, Philippines - Wanted: Tree surgeons to treat millions of trees nationwide that were “wounded” during the campaign for the May 10 elections when posters were nailed or stapled to them.

Many of these trees on roadsides, parks and private compounds will eventually die if the “wounds” are not immediately treated.

Forest pathologist Marcelina Pacho said “wounds” created by sharp objects serve as entry points of decay-causing microorganisms.

“Through time, the nails and staple wires rust and create metal stains in the trunk of trees,” she said.

“The rust and stains reset with the tannic acid and other chemical compounds in the wood, resulting in the tree’s decreased resistance to decay.”

Pacho said decay in a tree hampers the flow of water and other nutrients from the roots.

“Thus the tree’s health suffers, resulting in stunted growth or death,” she said.

Pacho said trees give off oxygen that man breathes.

“Every tree that supports life is worth saving and protecting,” she said.

Forest scientist Louvina Tandug said a tree is worth $167,000 (about P8 million) during its lifetime.

“Their grandeur, tenacity and beauty are probably the most enjoyable aspects of life,” she said.

Two mature trees can supply the oxygen requirements of a family of four.

Trees are also good noise barriers and enhance the aesthetics of the environment.

In cooling the air and giving shade, trees help cool the earth and reduce the greenhouse effect by absorbing carbon dioxide.
