MANILA, Philippines - President Arroyo and Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr. inaugurated the newly constructed Atherton Bridge in simple ceremonies yesterday.
The 34-meter bridge connects Accountant street in Barangay Sauyo to Atherton street in Barangay North Fairview, both in District II, Quezon City’s largest district in terms of land area, population and income.
The President’s Bridge Program, better known as “Tulay ng Pangulo,” funded the installation of a nine-bay double-lane superstructure for the bridge while the city government spent a total P47 million for the project – P13 million for the improvement of Atherton street, P12 million for Accountant street, P1 million for the acquisition of the road right-of-way, and P21 million for the bridge project itself.
The project was started in September 2008 and completed in February this year. It has been open for use by the public since March 2009.
The bridge has opened up a convenient alternative route for thousands of motorists who pass the area daily.
