Speedy probe of Balikatan fund mess sought

-

MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang ordered the Armed Forces yesterday to speed up investigation into allegations that some military officers misused funds for the Balikatan military exercises and pocketed US-funded rewards for informants on the Abu Sayyaf.

“The Armed Forces and the Department of National Defense have been directed to carefully speed up their investigation into these allegations,” Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said in an interview.

“We welcome such moves that’s why we were happy that the whistleblower (Lt. s.g. Nancy Gadian) surfaced so we can get to the bottom of this issue,” Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said.

“If there’s an anomaly, those responsible should be punished... we welcome any help to investigate this issue.”

US Ambassador Kristie Kenney said her government was concerned about reported anomalies in the handling of huge funds for the Balikatan exercises and the Rewards for Justice Program. – Paolo Romero
