129 colleges, universities to hike tuition

-

MANILA, Philippines - The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) said yesterday 129 colleges and universities all over the country are pushing through with their plan to raise tuition fees for academic year 2009-2010.

Lawyer Julito Vitriolo, CHED acting executive director, said that many of the 129 higher education institutions (HEIs) hiking their tuition are based in Metro Manila.

But Vitriolo stressed that the number is already considered low because as early as February, around 258 schools advised CHED about their intentions to raise their tuition.

CHED chairman Dr. Emmanuel Angeles III, and subsequently President Arroyo herself, had earlier issued separate appeals to HEIs to forego plans to hike tuition to spare students and their parents from a heavier financial burden amid the economic recession.

“There has been a drastic reduction in the number. Apparently, the appeal of chairman Angeles and the President had convinced school owners to put off plans for tuition hikes,” Vitriolo told The STAR in a phone interview.   – Rainier Allan Ronda
