A presidential medal of merit for Francis M

MANILA, Philippines - President Arroyo conferred yesterday the Presidential Medal of Merit on the late King of Rap, Francis Magalona, who died of leukemia last March 6 at the age of 44.

The President presented the posthumous award to Magalona’s widow, Pia Arroyo-Magalona, in simple ceremonies at the Reception Hall of Malacañang.

Magalona’s eight children were also present, including young actress Maxene Magalona.

Press Secretary Cerge Remonde and Secretary Cecile Guidote Alvarez, Presidential Assistant on Culture and executive director of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), likewise attended the ceremonies.

Magalona was cited for his “musical brilliance” and “nationalistic songs.” A short video of Magalona’s works was also shown.

“My family is proud of the honor given my late husband and it is just that he receive this because he is really a great patriot of the Philippines,” Pia said.

“There was a wave of joy that overcame me and it’s more happiness than anything,” Pia told reporters to explain why she was teary-eyed during the ceremonies.

A true blue child of showbusiness, Francis was the son of the 1950s movie actors Pancho Magalona and Tita Duran and grandson of the late Senator Enrique Magalona.

Francis started his entertainment career as a teen star in the 1980s but shifted to rap music and eventually pioneered this musical genre in the Philippines. The posthumous award for Francis is meant to formally recognize his significant contributions to the promotion of nationalism through his music and songs.

Among his notable hit compositions were “Mga Kababayan (My Countrymen),” “Man from Manila,” “Ito ang Gusto Ko (This is What I Want),” “Three Stars and a Sun” and “Kaleidoscope World.”

“Diagnosed with leukemia last year, Francis fought hard to survive and outlive the disease,” a Palace statement said.

Mrs. Arroyo later told reporters Magalona will be honored during the Independence Day celebrations on June 12. The President also said Magalona’s song “Cold Summer Nights” was one of her favorites.

Pia said the President asked her to help in preparing for the Independence Day concert for the late artist.
