Masbate governor survives ambush attempt

Masbate Gov. Elisa Kho survived an ambush attempt in a road bomb attack allegedly staged by communist New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas in Cataingan town yesterday.

Provincial police director Senior Superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac said Kho and her unidentified security escort sustained wounds after being hit by glass fragments from the shattered windshield of their vehicle.

Sindac said Kho and her security escorts were on their way to Masbate City when their convoy was attacked by NPA rebels in Barangay Gahit around 11:30 a.m.

The rebels reportedly detonated two improvised bombs along the road as Kho’s convoy passed by, Sindac said.

Sindac said the governor’s car was hit by the bombs that exploded on the left shoulder of the road.

Police investigators, however, did not rule out the possibility of business and personal motives in the attack.

The Army’s 9th Infantry Battalion was deployed to help the regional police in the manhunt for the suspects, Sindac said. – Cecille Suerte Felipe
