Antipolo mayor dies of multiple organ failure

Antipolo City Mayor Victor Sumulong died last night of multiple organ failure due to diabetes at the Makati Medical Center. He was 62.

Sumulong was admitted to the MMC last Saturday, according to LJ Sumulong, the late mayor’s chief of staff.

Sumulong was a cousin of former President Corazon Aquino. He was a former three-term congressman and ran for mayor in 2007 in Antipolo.

He is survived by his three children ages 17, 15 and 14. His family plans to bring his body to Congress, UP and Ateneo before he is laid to rest.

Sumulong will be replaced by Vice Mayor Milo Leyble and will be sworn at the Department of the Interior and Local Government office in Quezon City on Thursday.

Sumulong graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University and was a member of the Sigma Rho fraternity. He once served as a DILG assistant secretary during the 1970s. He was the son of former senator Lorenzo Sumulong.

LJ also said that Sumulong was the best friend of Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno since grade school. — Michael Punongbayan
