Rains to prevail over Luzon

MANILA, Philippines – Rains will continue to prevail over the western parts of Luzon, including Metro Manila, until today due to the enhanced southwest monsoon or hanging habagat, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said yesterday.

Pagasa weather forecaster Christopher Perez said generally improving weather conditions are expected in the country starting tomorrow based on latest atmospheric data.

Perez said although tropical storm “Julian” left the Philippine area of responsibility on Monday afternoon, it would continue to enhance the southwest monsoon and bring rains over Luzon, especially the western section.

At 10:30 a.m. yesterday, Pagasa said Julian was hovering over the South China Sea and continued to move away from the country.

At 10 a.m., the eye of Julian was spotted some 550 kilometers northwest of Laoag City with maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph.

Julian was forecast to move northwest at 11 kph towards the southern part of China where it is expected to make landfall in the next 24 hours, Perez said.    – Helen Flores
